The Fragments of David: Michelangelo in Papier-Mâché
Living in Florence, sooner or later, inevitably brings you to Michelangelo. And to Leonardo. And we – so the gossips say – brought these two giants together, even though, when they were alive, they did not like each other very much.
From the meeting of the two was born our series of David Fragments: large fragments of Michelangelo’s famous face, crafted in papier-mâché and enriched with engravings on gold, silver and copper leaf with decorations that dialogue with Leonardo da Vinci’s drawings.
Gold, silver, engraving
Engraving on leaf metal is one of our signature techniques. After applying the gold or silver leaf onto the papier-mâché, our artists engrave directly on the surface: Renaissance motifs, anatomical studies, strokes evoking Leonardo’s notebooks and the sculptural power of Michelangelo.
Each fragment is available in several versions: gold, engraved silver, aged silver, in sizes ranging from the small wall fragment to the large Frammentone, an imposing piece that dominates any room.
A fragment, a story
The fragment tells a story that no perfect copy could tell: that of time, of material, of the artisan’s hand. Each piece is unique, made in Florence, respecting the traditional techniques of papier-mâché.
For lovers of Italian art, the David is the absolute symbol. We chose to offer a fragment of it: what remains when beauty becomes home.
